Improbable

Sporting News announced today that Blackhawks' RW, Patrick Kane, won Rookie of the Year.  He was the number one overall draft pick a year ago for the Chicago hockey team.  The Hawks beat the odds in the draft lottery (they had less than a 9% chance of getting the top spot) and selected the eighteen-year-old with their pick.  Tonight, the Chicago Bulls beat the odds and secured the number one spot in the NBA draft lottery.  The team's chances that they'd get the number one pick was a meager 1.7%.  After discussing this with Hartigan, the only possible conclusion we could come up with was that someone fixed the lottery.  Why would we say there was a fix?  Two reasons: 1. Derrick Rose (a desperately needed PG and Chicago native) will most likely be the number one pick, and 2. Basketball is now the most corrupt professional sport.  Regardless, I'm pumped for next season.  Rose kicks ass and Chuck Swirsky (the inspiration for Bill Swerski's Superfans) will be calling radio games.  Bulls.

Its fixed. Chicago is one of the most important markets for both the NBA and NHL. And the Chicago franchises in both of those leagues didn't have much going for them; they needed star power to bring in the fans and draw attention to their respective games again. Rigged! We should ask a mathematician what the odds are of a city winning the lottery with less than 9% chance, and then a year later the same city winning a similar lottery with a 1.7% chance. That's like two brothers who each only play the lottery once per year hitting the jackpot on consecutive years.

The bulls should take Michael Beasley. He's a better player.

I agree with you, Luke, that Beasley's the better player; however, the Bulls need a true point guard. Hinrich was inconsistent and banged up quite a bit this past season, and the Hornets proved with Chris Paul how important and valuable a true PG can be. He was able to turn Tyson Chandler into one of the best big men in the league while Chandler couldn't do dick for the Bulls. The Bulls have Gooden, Gray, Noah, Thomas, and Deng so Beasley wouldn't necessarily get the playing time he needs/deserves. The Bulls could trade one of their big men to get a PG, but I don't think that any team is willing to part with someone with the potential star power of a Derrick Rose. Plus, Rose is the hometown hero. I think the city would hunt down Pax if he doesn't pick this kid.

Yeah, I still don't know. I think if you have the number one pick on the board you have to take the best player available. Rose makes sense, but he certainly didn't take over in the finals game like you would think a superstar would. It's kind of like last year though, Oden or Durant, you really can't go too wrong with either one, but you don't want to look like an asshole if it doesn't pan out. Perhaps the Timber-suck-wolves will take a gamble on OJ Mayo with the third pick, but I'm sure they'll pick some bust like they always do.
